Devorar
A downloadable game for Windows
Devorar is a D&D-inspired text adventure game where you, a lone adventurer, step into the pages of the book known as the NecroNOMicon. As you walk within the forbidden stories contained inside the book, you'll meet many characters, explore new stories, and get eaten by all sorts of horrifying monsters! Or even be the monster.
The goal when you make the dive, however, is one that you choose. Within each "stageplay" is an assortment of endings, all unwritten, that the NecroNOMicon has chosen you to discover. Along with the clothes on your back (and any deadly weapons) is a checklist on your journey, containing every ending that could possibly be realized. It is up to you to find them all. But whether you seek every possibility you can imagine, or just get yourself eaten on purpose, they each serve the NecroNOMicon's unspoken ends quite well.
What you choose to do, and where you take these stories, is within your hands.
- Instructions -
The game is played through a command line interface, represented with the first tab of the "drawer". You will see this when first beginning the game. The command line is inputted into with this format:
[verb] [preposition] [targetnoun] [preposition] [detailnoun]
For example, you may input, "drink potion", "attack salem with dagger", or even "rub salem in stomach". If you mean to refer to part of an actor's body, you may also type commands that look like "rub salem's stomach". The parser is quite lax, so you can use a variety of combinations to mean the same thing.
Files contain the list of valid vocabulary that is used for the game.
---------------------------------
This pre-alpha test build currently only includes one stage and one playable character, which will be loaded automatically when starting the game. Only a prey role is playable at this time. More playable characters, more items, more spells, and far more stages are all planned for the future! And, soon enough, a campaign to sink your teeth into.
Be aware that bugs are very likely, and most graphics are works-in-progress. Please report any bugs you find.

Is this game dead? realy hope its not
no, the game is on hiatus
RIP another promising project.
The game is on hiatus. We will continue development, the game itself is just more complex than we thought
As fair a reason as any! Thanks for the update!
Any plans for Android compatibility?
Salem is so cute!
Very good game
Is there a guide? I wanna get the nice cozy stay ending
Just heal yourself while complimenting and enjoying yourself inside his stomach
how to get the 4th ending?
I Love this game!!!
Can't wait for the next update!
This is great so far~! n__n/ Devorar reminds me a lot of "Corruption of Champions" :) I like the concept and look forward to how it'll develop~
Might I suggest an increase to the font size? Devorar has by far the smallest font I've seen outside of Lustful Desires
Yup! Next patch we're releasing such a scenario.
This project is impressive! I enjoyed how open my choices felt to explore using the command line (compared to listed options in similar games). Exploring Salem's character as the two of you interact was also a highlight, everything is well written and the styled text adds a lot as well!
The more I think about how you'd have to parse the command line in order to make interactions work the more curious and impressed I am. I'd really like to chat about how you manged that if you'd be interested to reach out somehow.
I hope to see this project develop further, you've got something really novel with a lot of potential here.
Thank you!! If you didn't know, we actually have a Discord where you can ask any questions you have. You're free to check it out in the recent dev logs.
very interesting concept and idea would love to see this game progress
Have played it and yeah, definitely needs some work. What words have effects isn't clear at all and the amount of necessary repeating of commands to get endings is kind of obnoxious
May I ask where in particular you find the annoying repetition of commands? I am interested in fixing these issues with the next patch, at least for the pre-alpha and as something to remember as we continue making progress.
The issue lies in the fact that the game doesn't automatically highlight the text field when you put in a command. You have to click and then type every time.
Ahhh, I see! Well, fortunately, that's a very easy fix to make. As for the repetition of commands in general, I believe I have some remedies on the way, namely allowing one to select from the command history and with the encounter design requiring less of it.
Thank you for your input!
I'm going to echo playfulpetfox's comments on wording ether give a set of words we can use or use descriptive comments in your area descriptors, bold/highlight words that are usable things like "it might be bad if you wait around here"
Will be my plan in the upcoming patch! :>
I love the concept for this, but it's in a really rough state. 90% of what I tried to do does nothing, and what does work has to be worded very specifically. For example, struggle, resist, escape, etc don't work. You HAVE to word it as "Struggle against Salem" unless in seemingly the perfect scenario. I found that if I was grappled at one stage and tried "Struggle", it didn't work, but at seemingly another unmentioned stage of it, "Struggle" would work in the same way as squirm. Inconsistency is the name of this game. This, of course, only happens after you get him to appear.
I tried "Call out into woods.", "Run into woods" , "Progress into woods" "Venture into woods" and literally nothing worked. I tried about 20 other things and nothing had any affect. This does not feel good to play when everything you try just doesn't work. I only managed to progress to Salem by just putting "Wait". I know the game is early, but what's available is near impossible to access by anyone with my seemingly lacking mindset for how to fenagle these games. I can't feel entirely at blame when the way forward is still seemingly picky, such as the very, very precise wording for resisting.
Another key example being how "Resist" on its own does nothing, but "Squirm" does. The player has almost no autonomy over their actions, and instead of fighting Salem, are fighting this game's limitations...of which there are currently far, far too many.
At this point, I had just wanted to see what would happen later, but I couldn't get him to even swallow me. I tried "Wait", spammed "Squirm", and tried every variation I could think of for "Give up". Nothing worked, nothing happened. 50 "Squirm"s later and nothing changed. I did what my character couldn't and gave up on the game, because it's near impossible to find any of the content.
I look forward to seeing this game come along, but it needs a lot of TLC right now.
Ahhh I'm terribly sorry your experience wasn't the best, I'll take your criticism to heart. Understandable that you tried the aforementioned things and you're frustrated it didn't appear to do anything, or that it wasn't clear how to make progress. There is a very limited vocabulary at the moment, so I intend on remedying that as we continue and allowing a much wider breadth of interactions. For now I believe a patch is in order to fix these issues. Thank you for taking the time for your comment.
Thank you for listening and accepting the criticism, it's definitely not easy hearing harsh things. It's also not easy making a game from the ground up either, so I definitely understand it will take time to grow. I'll be sure to keep up with the game's development, and I really hope you keep at it for long enough that this game starts to shine and gain some traction. It fills a niche that not many other games do, so I definitely would love to see this grow!
Tl;dr, Thanks for taking criticism, and best of luck with this project.
how do i do escape the grapple?? i feel like i'm using every synonym for attack on every possible bodypart and nothing is working, and can you please add some way to copy and paste from my previous commands so i don't have to retype so much?
You actually need to hit their stomach or deal enough damage with a single attack! For retyping, you can still use CTRL+C and CTRL+V to copy and paste, but I'll probably add something to streamline that.
ctrl c/v doesn't work since it won't let me highlight the text from previous entries
